Breaking News! The US May Impose A 600% Tariff On Paper And Plastic Packaging Exported From China

Oct 17, 2024

On October 8, 2024, the United States initiated anti-dumping and countervailing duty investigations on thermoformed molded fiber products originating from China and Vietnam (U.S. Customs Tariff Numbers: 4823.70.0020 and 4823.70.0040). The products involved include thermoformed molded fiber products, including but not limited to plates, bowls, clamshells, trays, lids, food or catering service contact packaging, and consumer or other product packaging.
From October 8, 2024, any fiber molded products imported from China and Vietnam may be subject to retroactive anti-dumping or countervailing duties. Preliminary estimates show that China's exports may be subject to tariffs as high as 604.4%, and Vietnam's exports may be subject to tariffs as high as 328.52%! Since the market players of my country's pulp molded packaging are overseas, especially disposable meal bags, almost all of them are exported to the United States and the European Union. Since the domestic ban on plastics has been in name only in recent years, the paper meal bag market has been further eroded by cheaper plastic meal bags. Therefore, this move by the United States may deal a fatal blow to my country's paper and plastic packaging industry.
